Giclée Prints

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A GICLEE?

I personally, love being able to offer giclee reproductions because they are accurate, beautiful, and affordable to the average person who might fall in love with an original piece of art that they cannot have because of money. You buy art because it makes you feel something- nostalgia, peace, excitement, intrigue, or maybe just because you like looking at it. If you love it, you should be able to have it, so…. Don’t walk away… if you can’t afford the original, buy a Giclée !

A Giclée (zhee-CLAY) print is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity reproduction done on a special large format printer.

Giclées are produced from digital scans of existing artwork. They can be printed on several types of media, from canvas to watercolor paper to transparent acetates. Giclées are superior to traditional lithography in many ways. The colors are brighter, can last more than 100 years, and Giclées are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than composed of tiny dots.

Lithography uses tiny dots of four colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) to trick the eye into seeing various hues and shades of color.  Giclées use inkjet technology, but far more sophisticated technology than your desktop printer, with light-fast inks and finer, more numerous print heads.

Giclees are coveted by collectors, and are desired by artists because they don’t have to be produced in large quantities, requiring substantial capital investment and storage space. Giclées can be produced on demand, reducing the financial risk for artists. Giclées are priced between original art and regular limited edition lithographs. Limited edition lithograph prints are usually produced in editions of 500-1000 or more, while Giclées rarely exceed 50-100 reproductions. Sometimes the 1st 10 prints are considered more valuable in a limited run, but the value can increase as you near the end of a run simply because when the edition closes, there will never be another!
