In 1900, L Frank Baum published the book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, illustrated by a man named Denslow. Later, the book was made into a movie and whoever the genius was who took the apple trees in the enchanted forest and turned them into walking, talking, apple throwing trees, he’s my hero. When I was a child the movie was shown on television once a year and, though I wasn’t too fond of those flying monkeys, I always looked forward to those fascinating trees.
Named by my husband, this piece is a whimsical representation of anyone who’s ever had any sort of fight in the outdoors….throwing and dodging apples, chokecherries, snowballs, tomatoes, chestnuts, or anything that might sting a little but not maim or kill… all in good fun, and not motivated by the violence of video games. With 3 brothers and a host of neighborhood boys in my country neighborhood, I can well remember yelling “time out!” as I dove behind a rock, a tree, or a snowbank. Ahhh….sweet memories.
