Hospital Art

Last fall when I was at an art festival in Manchester, Maine, I was approached by two elderly ladies who oooohed and ahhhed over my tree art for several minutes, all the while whispering to each other, and pointing at different pieces.  Sometimes I can “read” a browser, and know if they’re just looking, or if they’re seriously looking and might actually buy something.  I didn’t peg these two people as buyers, and I didn’t know why they were whispering, since I was right there and could clearly hear them.  Finally, one of them approached me and asked me if I ever showed my art in public (I thought I WAS in public, but I played along). Turns out that they jury art for Maine General Hospital in Augusta, and they thought I might be a good fit.  I later found out that one of the criteria was that you must have framed art pieces worth between 1 and $300 because that’s the price range where they have the most success.  Since the hospital gets 20%, they obviously want not only relatively inexpensive, but also universally socially acceptable art.  I told them that was ok with me, since I haven’t done any pornographic trees, and have no plans to pursue that avenue. : )  They also accept limited edition giclee art, so that helps me fall neatly into their price category.  One follow up phone call later and I have to bring 5 framed pieces to the hospital on Monday for a jury session.    If I am accepted, I will have my tree art hanging on the walls of Maine General sometime in 2011.  I am excited, since my number one goal in 2010 is to increase my exposure in as many ways as possible.  Fingers crossed on this one!
