Wherever I’ve worked or been or traveled in my life, the human rear end seems to be of particular focus in many people’s lives. “Are these jeans too tight?” “Can you see my panty line?” “Does this swimsuit fit my butt?” Considering the fact that we all should be moving forward, an awful lot of attention seems to be directed behind us. Trying to find the humor in this perennial issue, I looked up the definition and found “the fleshy part of the hind end upon which one sits”. Don’t you just love the word “fleshy”? Looking up synonyms was interesting. Literal muscular name- glutimus maximus (why not minimus?), buttocks, rear end, hind end, back end, bottom, derriere (French), trasero (Spanish) or the Latin nates (pronounced naa-teez) Slang names bum, buns, butt, biscuits, apple, hams (what’s with the food reference?), can, arse, ass, rump, fanny, tail, stern, aft, moon, haunches and, my favorite, cheeks. I love thinking that a part of my face is also a part of my butt/fanny/rump. Let’s not forget the derogatory names- caboose, poop deck, badonkadonk, and (one that I’ve NEVER heard before) balloon knot. I don’t even want to think about that one.
What I want to know is, does anyone ever say “Does my butt look small in these pants?”
